"Chained to the ritual stone was the blasphermer Sankor Velliche. Accused of violating holy sites, Sankor was to be put to death. He was innocent, of course, but it didn't matter. A week prior, Sankor had gotten into an argument with a reverend. A reverend who had friends in high places.
The method of execution was a mystery, few had seen it. The crowd, watching from the stands of the amphitheater, murmured in anticipation. Sankor pleaded and begged to the friends he spotted in the stand, but they turned away sheepishly. No one in their right mind would defy the word of the ecclesiarchs.
Hushed silence fell over the crowd as the executioner entered the amphitheater. Sankor's eyes windened as the executioner prepared a brand. He recognized the symbol on the end - "CORPSE."
Sankor writhed and screamed as the brand seared the word into his flesh. it went on forever, seemingly, until the white hot pain receded. He collapsed as prone as his chains would allow, panting as his flesh sizzled. And yet, despite the pain, what Sankor noticed immediately was the silence. The crowd was showing no signs of life. Laboriously, he lifted his head to view the audience.
Each and every member stared transfixed at the symbol buned into Sankor's back. For a moment, he thought he saw a pale light reflecting off the eyes of his sworn friends. A moment later, all hell broke loose as the crowd rushed forward like rabid animals.
And it was in his final moments that Sankor wept. As his sworn friends, acquaintances, and even his mate ripped him to pieces. After the frenzy wore off and the crowd dispersed without recollection of their actions, a single piece of Sankor Velliche remained - and on it was a glowing pale mark."
