She remembers the day her father took her out of Economics Training to go see the Painted Plateau. He paid the gatekeepers, pressing large numbers she knew they scraped together without batting an eye. Turned up the music in our vehicle, playing music loud enough it rattled her seat.
The Painted Plateau was too close to the rad zones. I always asked him why there were rad zones, but my dad says there are some mysteries left for adulthood.
The sun was shining off the vibrant hues of the art etched into the large, orange plateau. Large, bold lines painted to look like neon signs, large, beautiful faces, all laughing around an impossibly ornate star. I asked my father dozens of questions, who made it, why is it here, can we come again, but the only question he paused on was, "Why did you take me here?"
He smiled, waying that living in a system like Primas V means we have to find the space between rules to dream. That he wants me to always remember that, and no matter what comes next, we'd always have today.
Over the years, the rad zones got bigger, the rules got bigger, and growing up meant learning not only good mysteries, but plenty bad ones too. When the crowdfunders were used to zero out 'problematic' districts, she realized that the Painted Plateau was a childhood dream. Something to hold on to, but times like these needed something darker.
That was the first night she started dreaming about a place of dark, green shadows. Elegant, long spiking horns, disappearing into an endless, fading horizon. A place where the rules were more. They were what you made them, not what they made you. She dreamed of dancing cats, sharp teeth, and shaper spears.
It was not until the dream of dancing cats and sharp teeth gave way to a ship docking at Primas V, despite the unrest. A secret ship, destined to die.
